One of the best ways to become a better designer is the practice. As Ira Glass once said, is the best way to get better at creative work, to do a huge amount of it. And if you are practicing design work, you get to design things the way you want them done - not your customers or your boss - and so it can be a lot more fun. One of my favorite things to design practice is movie posters, because there are so many different directions that you can go, and so many different themes, characters or scenes that you could cover.
It is also possible to create incredible, incredible movie poster designs that are often better than the originals.
